SUV airbag increases pedestrian protection
Upholstery Journal | February 2008
Passenger safety systems leader Autoliv unveiled a front module-integrated airbag designed to protect pedestrians in collisions involving sport utility vehicles, where the risk to pedestrians is 2.5 times greater than in collisions involving cars.
The airbag has a pre-crash sensor that triggers the airbag to deploy milliseconds before impact. Autoliv said that in tests the forces acting on the lower legs of a pedestrian test dummy at impact were reduced by 50 percent and on the head by 40 percent.
