Orders from residential furniture factories were flat in October 2009, compared with the previous year. This marks the first year since October 2007 that there was no year-to-year decline. Additionally, 41 percent of survey participants reported gains in orders, which are up from 33 percent in September. Factory shipments, however, were down 10 percent in October from the previous month. Year-to-date, orders were running 16 percent behind the 2008 pace and shipments were down 18 percent.

Orders were still 28 percent below the October 2007 level, and down 20 percent from two years ago.

Consulting firm Smith Leonard conducted the survey.
