Tips for mixing patterns
Upholstery Journal | February 2010
Combining different patterns, fabric and upholstery can create rich, intriguing interior spaces. Here are some tips for getting started:
- GET FOCUSED. Select a favorite pattern or fabric to be the main focus of the space. Applying this choice throughout a setting will create a unified look with room for accents.
- FORM A CONNECTION. Use accent pieces to complement your main pattern or fabric to produce an overall theme.
- PLAY WITH NUMBERS. An odd number of patterns can help draw attention to the focus. An even number of accent patterns won’t compete with each other or with the primary pattern.
- SPREAD IT OUT. Using one pattern or color too often in a specific area can be overwhelming and drown out the other pieces in the room. Peppering patterns throughout a space ensures equal attention to each section of the room.
- ADD TEXTURE. Patterns don’t always have to be flat and multi-colored. A solid, textured piece can be visually appealing while adding dimension to a space.
- BALANCE THE SCALE. Patterns of both large and small scales will create visual balance when evenly dispersed throughout the space.
