Former executive denounces Ikea in tell-all book
Upholstery Journal | February 2010
Jonan Stenebo, a former Ikea executive and personal assistant to company founder Ingvar Kamprad, wrote a book titled “Sanningen om Ikea” (“The Truth About Ikea”) criticizing the Swedish furniture company and its owners, the Kamprad family. Stenebo, who worked for the company for 20 years, claims the company is not eco-friendly and purchases illegal wood at low prices to produce and sell the popular furniture at a competitive price. Additional claims state the stories of Kamprad owning a 30-year-old Ikea sofa were fabricated to make the media and consumers alike believe in the longevity and quality of Ikea products, as well as the endearing persona of Kamprad himself. Stenebo also claims that Kamprad keeps watch on employees via informants scattered throughout the company, and that Kamprad’s son Peter, apparent heir to the company, is sexist and racist toward workers.
