Researchers claim furniture enhances creativity
Upholstery Journal | February 2010
Researchers from the Center for Cultural Studies and Analysis in Philadelphia, Pa., say furniture can provide a much-needed creative environment for children, leading to success later in life. Jamie O’Boyle and Margaret King, researchers from the center, visited a New Jersey furniture store and observed that most customers respond emotionally to furniture and assign value to each piece. O’Boyle and King noted that parents contemplate the benefits of furniture for their children, and are often willing to pay more for furniture that serves a function while offering entertainment. Brightly colored bed systems with attached storage units like desks and shelving create a play center for children while potentially enforcing good habits, such as organization, that could stay with them into adulthood. The research is still in the early stages, and the researchers say studies focused on the psychological effects of furniture are scarce.
