Used car sales, median age of cars increasing
Upholstery Journal | June 2009
Auto upholsterers and trimmers may have more opportunities to work on used cars in the near future. From November through January, 511,000 used cars were sold and it is predicted that 15 percent of cars purchased this year will be used cars. Additionally, the median age of cars on the road increased to 9.4 years in 2008, up from 9.2 in 2007. However, vehicle scrappage rates decreased in 2008 to 5.1 percent, down 0.4 percent from 2007.
Consumers are buying more used cars and driving their older cars for longer periods of time. This could create a need for interior reupholstery and trim work for upholsterers. General refurbishing and accessorizing may increase as well.
