The U.S. Department of Commerce reported that sales increased in May over April. Nominal retail sales grew 0.5 percent, and motor vehicle and parts sales also rose 0.5 percent. The Recovery Act is said to be the reason for the uptick in consumer confidence, but May sales are still well below averages for the first quarter.
