Upholstery Journal | August 2010
A longtime customer created a custom tricycle from the ground up and contracted DC Auto Upholstery to do the seat for it. First, a pan was fashioned from fiberglass. Next, a template was created from cardboard of how the seat was to be shaped. The pan is intended to fit two passengers, so the foam had to be molded to prevent the passenger from sliding forward into the driver. Layers of high-density foam were stacked and glued to the pan. Next, the foam was cut with an electric saw using the cardboard template. Then the foam was shaped with an electric sander and covered with ¼-inch padding.
Next, a template for the upholstery was created, and black leather was cut. Scallops were sewn on the face of the seat to match the motif on the motorcycle’s paint job. The cover was sewn and installed on the fiberglass seat pan using glue. The bottom of the seat was covered with ¼-inch black felt to create a clean, professional finish at all angles. 14 hours.
Judges comments: Wow! This job was more than just upholstery. High degree of difficulty with a ground-up design and build. Creative use of materials.
