Upholstery Journal | August 2010
The customer had a certain look in mind and couldn’t find it through the restaurant and bar catalogs available. Creating a small-scale prototype helped win the bid for the job. Then after several adjustments from the original architect’s plans, the final design was finalized. Exact measurements were used to fit these pieces in the area between two walls. Three pieces needed to be the same size to balance and repeat the pattern flow, and one additional piece sat alone. The client wanted the banquettes to be 60 inches high to make a statement. The patterns were drawn on cardboard, transferred to Ultra Suede (stable material for pattern-making), then transferred to the faux leather. Various stitching methods were used, including top stitching and commercial baseball stitching.
Judges comments: Wonderful design and use of fabric. A lot of time was spent to satisfy the customer’s needs. Creative use of mixed vinyl. Love the design and the choice of four different fabrics.
