A federal lawsuit will determine whether the Barcelona chair, created by designer Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and other 1920s designs are in the public domain.

Contract manufacturer Knoll, which claims exclusive trademark rights to the chair, and home furnishings distributor Alphaville Design, have been battling over the chair since 2007. The court ruled for a jury trial and that if the designs had gone into the public domain at any time, the trademark rights will not be valid.
