Smoking bans move upholstery outdoors

Now that more and more cities and states are implementing smoking bans, dining establishments are responding with expanded choices for outdoor seating.
“The restaurant or bar owner has had to make an adjustment to more outdoor café-type patio rooms so their smoking customers can still be served,” says Tom Mumford, vice president of sales and marketing for AMC Industries.
Although outdoor dining is not a new concept, restaurateurs are putting more time, thought and money into outdoor seating options in an attempt to retain their customers who smoke. AMC is researching several strategies to address this shift in the market.
“We’ve had to rethink our design of booths and tables to withstand the elements,” Mumford says. “We’re experimenting with marine-grade vinyls and stainless-steel fasteners, which resist corrosion. We’re using a reticulating foam that water will pour through.”
